Maylands – New Residential
A young family of four was requiring space to entertain while having quiet private places.
This house was fun with Council as it was outside their rules and yet when it went to a committee although it was rejected their comments were we should have more houses like this. We had to take this to the next level up called a SAT hearing where an independent sits with us and Council and deliberates over the concept and brings about a mutual solution.
In our case, it was short lived as when we came to build we hit the water table as Council wanted us to sink the house lower so it wasn’t imposing on the public walking past. It was much lower than the neighbours’ anyway as that was textbook R-Code design. We had a race to get it built before the neighbours’.
With the Double Garage at the front, the Council wanted half of it to be a Carport even though it is buried 1.5m into the ground. Behind was the pool with a grassed roof to the Garage and then behind the pool a sunken lounge before you hit the Alfresco. All the outdoor living was at the front as it commanded views across the lake over the road and beyond to the City Skyline. Living areas spilled out into the Alfresco and Bedrooms stepped down to Ground level at the rear making the house appear grounded and intimate.
